Natchez Trace

Enjoy your ride!  I rode the Trace with several friends in April 2006.  The damage from Hurricane Katrina was still clearly evident, and in fact we were literally the first ones to use a restroom toward the southern end: the crew were just taking down the "Do Not Cross" tape as we pulled up.

It's a really nice ride but look out in the vicinity around Tupelo: the drivers there are more numerous and not as considerate as they are along most of the rest of the trail.

You can do far worse than having a meal at the Loveless Motel and Cafe, at the north end.  YUMMY food!

June 2022 Tour of South Vancouver Island, BC

Wonderful WS Buddies,

I'm planning to pedal around southern Vancouver Island including Nanaimo, Sooke Potholes, Galloping Goose, and Victoria after June 7th for about a week ("BC 2022"), then heading back to Fairhaven, WA. I like to hike, sightsee, and swim while it is warm.

So let me know your input!

Flow,

Bri'

mu natchez trace ride june 2022
The Natchez Trace ride went well. I drove to Nashville then took my bike on the bus, because it was the only available option, to Natchez, and rode back to Nashville by myself. (My two friends had to back out of the trip. What happens at my age I guess.) At least the bike did not get damaged on the bus...
I had a tight sched due to being unsupported so I covered nearly one hundred miles a day including off Trace riding, and though it was very hot and my 40 year old bike had extra weight, I had no problems. No flats (I ride tubulars) and no mechanicals although I did have to replace my Garmin speed and cadence sensors. They were about seven or eight years old and I broke their connecting wire packing the bike in the box for the bus before I left home.
I would say at 68 years old, toward the end of the day going up some of the 7-8 percent climbs in the north part, gearing lower than my 39 front 21 rear would have been welcome, although not critical. The last 60-70 miles had the steepest hills, some long ones start at 5% and get up to 8% before leveling off. The steepest I saw was 10% but that was off of the Trace. For touring, I now find I would like some gel padded shorts. I took it very easy due to the heat so the days I covered 100 miles or above were not difficult, just long. My rear had more problems than my legs by far. Water was available throughout but I did beg some from churches or RVs a couple of times. I carried three  big water bottles mostly two were enough. Food was another issue I took gels and bars and needed them about half the time. I got tired of fast food but managed to get fruit and salads often enough to get by. Cell coverage was always there but sometimes slow. Huge biting flies were atrocious. 100% deet keeps them away. Mosquitos were not so much of a bother. Stealth camping would be no problem. There were some road closures and the detours were not so nice. The big bridge over the Tennessee River has plenty of room for both cars and bikes. I stayed at several hotels, the Hotel Belmont stands out as fabulous, the average cost was about 60 bucks. Two warmshowers, great time at both. I don't know if it was the heat or what but I only saw about ten other bicyclists riding the Trace the whole time. Traffic was light to very light except near big attractions or cities. Jackson was the worst, they use the Trace as a buisness detour there it seems.
Very few hateful screamers.
It was a beautiful, intresting, historic, and peacefull ride. -ken

Storage in Bangkok

Hello lovely cyclists!

My husband and I are biking through Southeast Asia (Chiang Mai east thru Laos, down Vietnam then back to Bangkok) and are hoping to find someone to store our bicycle boxes with in Bangkok (10/5/22-11/20/22), and to possibly stay with at the end of our trip or along the way. Is anyone willing to do this or have a resource that could?

Any suggestions for this or traveling in SE Asia are welcome!

Best,
Flam & Ingo

Bike box storage

Hi Sue,
From your bio I figure you are resourceful when it comes to cycling. As for needing a place for a bike box at your start and stop city, I usually contact a couple/few WS members directly, maybe a month out, simply asking for what I need. Somebody has always come through.

If you are riding the Camino, whether walking or riding, good times, good community. Might even consider a Lisbon Pilgrim house, they might even store the box if you plan to eat and sleep at their place coming and going.
Enjoy, Peter

Hi Sue, I did this trip in

Hi Sue, I did this trip in June 2018 as part of a longer trip. We found accommodation in pilgrims albergues to be practical and easily available (and of course very cheap), but you can't book in advance and they close very early.

Languedoc & Catalonia along the Mediterranean

Hi, everyone!
I've been thinking of doing 600-700 kms (370-440 mi) from French Valence (Drome) to Barcelona starting February 2nd, and then the same road back starting Feb 11 or 12. It seems a chill ride, all along waymarked bike trails (Via Rhona and EV 8), and mostly flat except maybe the border crossing. I'm looking forward to the sights, sounds and smells of the Mediterranean. Larger towns on the way: Montelimar, Avignon, Montpellier, Narbonne, Perpignan, Girona/Figueres. If you live around there and can host, I'd be happy with a roof over my head for a night. If you'd like to join me for a day or more, also let me know (I'd like to do 100 kms a day on flat roads, and maybe 50 kms on one rougher day). Any advice from people who did this ride before will be welcome.
Stan.

Roundabout touring

I decided to ride RAGBRAI this year and am catching the train from Los Angeles to Kansas City. I will then ride to Sioux City (RAGBRAI's starting point), some 300 miles away. After RAGBRAI's 500 mile circus, I intend to ride to Normal, IL, to pick up Route 66 and ride all the way back to Santa Monica and then home to San Diego. If anyone has any thoughts or tips, I will surely welcome them.
Many thanks,
Donal

Hi all, new here in these parts. Planning a trip from Sweden and down around Europe for a few months this upcoming summer (though planning is a bit of an overstatment, will mostly go whichever direction I feel like).

Would be fun to meet some bikers during the trip. Hope I'll see you around!

Brussels to Italy

The planning is just maddening!
it's about the journey.
I leave next Tuesday March 22nd and fly into Brussels.
The WS Host I stayed with in 2019 already told me to come see him and stay there , so that sounds good I want to hear about his travels.
I figure this time I'll ride South down the east coast of France and crossing into Italy at some point. Then I was thinking of crossing Italy down to Bari.

Basically it's Head south and see how far I get but June 1st :)

Question is it still possible to contact host using Phone or are we on our own ?
Like I said it's about the jpurney

Dear WM Community,

In a few weeks, I am cycling from Germany to Turkey.

Random question: which itinerary would you pick this spring:

a. Swiss, Italy (north-south), (ferry to) Albania, Greece, (ferry to) Turkey.

b. Swiss, Italy (north), the Balkans, Turkey (via Istanbul)

Hope to see you on the way!

Kind greets,
Benny

Kelowna to Vancouver

In the planning/moonshot phase of a potential trip between Kelowna and Vancouver between Aug 1 - Aug 12th. I am playing an ultimate frisbee tournament in Kelowna the last weekend of July, and potentially back to Kelowna 3 weeks later.
My partner started cycling during COVID and in 2021 she cycled her first tour with me to Kingston from Toronto (300 km). She is interested in doing more, and we are actively looking for route advice and pointers.
